Gabe Acheson’s concept behind his musical persona Goldwash is to create music that will “gold wash” suffering into artistic expression, leaving you dancing through your pain, heartache, and strife. Though his music can be described as “jazz-infused indie-electronic baroque-soul”, Goldwash self identifies his genre as “existential funk”, a unique genre related to his intent of making music that will turn “shitty experiences into a positive thing”. Acheson, a classical and jazz pianist, studied composition at Yale and graduated in 2016. In 2017, he released his first EP, Episode, which accurately showcases his ear for catchy and accessible, yet musically interesting and dynamic melodic phrases. He pairs these melodies exquisitely with his clever, yet relatable lyrics, creating the perfect funky musical cocktail that will inevitably leave you wanting more. The four-song EP consists of banger after banger, but my personal favorites are “Won’t Cry” and the title track, “Episode”. So next time you’re feeling extra sad, take the opportunity to “gold wash” your life with this existential funk, which is certain have you sobbing while simultaneously getting your groove on.
