When one thinks of local music in Los Angeles, it’s hard not to think of The Smell. For the past nineteen years, The Smell has been ground zero for Los Angeles’s local musicians and music lovers, and for good reason. It’s served as the city’s countercultural petri dish, a place where artists of all stripes can freely experiment and hone their craft. The Smell’s non-profit status combined with its all-inclusive, no-holds-barred booking format encourages radical creativity and unfettered expression among its artists, resulting in events which consistently push boundaries and expand the idea of what a show can look and sound like. On any given night, one might find a harsh experimental noise duo sharing a bill with a soft, intimate bedroom pop quartet, followed closely by a thirty minute solo ambient electronic sound bath complete with live visuals. One never really knows what to expect at The Smell. but there’s beauty in the unexpected, and that’s what’s keeps people coming day after day, year after year.
